What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making public web content easy for AI-assisted search systems to crawl, understand, verify, and cite. It builds on technical SEO and useful, people-first content; it is not a separate Google ranking system and it cannot guarantee a mention in an AI answer.

How GEO Relates to Traditional SEO

GEO does not replace SEO — it depends on it. Classic search shows a list of links, while AI-assisted search composes an answer from several sources and may link to the pages it used. That shifts the emphasis toward passages that answer a question clearly on their own, facts that are consistent across the web, and pages that systems can interpret without guessing.

Technical Access Is the Foundation

Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet before it can support AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked for ChatGPT Search inclusion, while Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot. The website, CDN, and firewall must all permit access; an open robots.txt cannot override a blocked host.

  • Keep important information in crawlable text and connect it with internal links
  • Publish canonical URLs, localized alternates, a sitemap, and accurate metadata
  • Make structured data match the information visitors can actually see
  • Verify that search crawlers receive a successful response without a challenge or login

Make Every Important Answer Verifiable

Use descriptive headings, direct self-contained explanations, consistent entity names, named authors, publication dates, and links to primary sources. Schema.org markup can describe those visible facts, but it cannot replace expertise, original evidence, accurate product information, or independent authority signals.

Content That AI Systems Can Use

Write for the questions customers actually ask, and make the answer easy to find on the page:

  • Answer the main question in the first sentences, then add details
  • Create a separate page for each service: who it is for and what it includes
  • Publish frequently asked questions with real, specific answers
  • Keep business facts identical everywhere: name, services, languages, locations, contacts
  • Update pages when facts change and show the date of the last update
  • Use clear lists and comparisons instead of vague marketing copy

How to Measure AI Visibility

Track a fixed set of customer questions in Armenian, English, and Russian and record whether your brand is linked, how it is described, and which source page appears. Google began testing dedicated generative-AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026; standard Search Console indexing and performance data remain essential, alongside referral analytics from AI platforms.

What GEO Cannot Promise

No technical implementation can guarantee that ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity, Claude, or another system will cite or recommend a business. Results depend on crawlability, relevance, factual quality, freshness, authority, and wider web consensus. Fabricated reviews, statistics, credentials, or schema weaken trust instead of improving it.
